Assuming we have two runners who begin their respective training plans at the same level of fitness. And assuming the same training history, the same physiological characteristics, the same training schedule that included one long run, one speed workout, one tempo run, and one day off with the same type of stretching, core & strength work...
Which runner would be better prepared to run a fast race over the 10K distance if runner A used the other 3 days each week to jog easily for 40 minutes and runner B used his 3 days to cross train at a moderately hard effort, either swimming or biking?
I've heard the answers "You get better at what you do the most" but I'm not sure that I buy that as a legit response. Wouldn't cross training at a moderately hard effort lend itself to better conditioning? Why or why not?
