For you guys that are in shape and know how fast you are at any given time, do you feel that your pace is slower in the cold? And I don't mean 30s, I mean 0 without windchill. Given snow/ice/wind are also factors associated with limiting your pace, but I am most curious about temperature.
For example, a 5 mile tempo in 0 degrees, would you say you would be 10 seconds slower/mile? 20 seconds? Not slower at all?
I am training for a spring marathon coming back from not running for a while and I won't be doing any kind of races before so I am wondering what kind of paces I should shoot for in the marathon, but think that running in such cold might not give me the answer I am looking for! I hope to average 80 miles a week, so getting out there isn't the problem.
I realize that many of you don't have experience with running workouts in such cold, what are your experiences in say, 20 degrees? 10 degrees?
((Yes, I have read letsrun enough to know that I should be doing my workouts based on effort, and to find out how fast I might be on race day, I need to just run the race, but still..))
