I don't doubt that Rupp is in shape to break the record, if Salazar says so. However, I think he will struggle to be able to go that deep in the well in his first race in months. So I'll peg him for a 13:12.

The fact that the Oregon Project is announcing that they are chasing records makes this really cool. Generally, they only talk about competing against those in the race. For Salazar to come out and say that Rupp is targeting the AR's in the up coming meets must mean that Rupp's fitness is off the charts. Obviously Salazar would know better than us what kind of shape his athletes are in, but I've never heard of athletes at this level setting PR's and breaking records in their first race of the season. Am I wrong?

I think it's more due to the fact that there's no championships this year, so they have nothing better to do.
hard to imagine a first race in mid-January being an American record. Lomong's record is pretty strong. So, it depends to me on what they want to do with this race. If Salazar thinks he can get the AR here, then he will do it or barely miss, because Salazar is very, very good at judging what his runners can run in races, based on their workouts. Time and time again, he has been right. Solinsky blew the 1st 10k AR attempt only because he ran 14 seconds faster than the record, as Rupp was correctly predicted to be ready to defeat Meb's record that day. In high school and from that point on, in races supposed to be fast (13:37, 26:48, numerous indoor record attempts), he's always been fast. If, on the other hand, they are treating it just as a rust buster, then he won't be running much faster than 13:12-15.

The notorious "DNS Galen" may start, will not finish.
Look it's RCS, the great non contributor.
I don't see an AR on his first race out. 13:15 would be good.
OK. Let's see.
I pointed out that Rupp has a massive amount of DNS/DNF finishes.
Meanwhile, you say that, um, he won't get an AR in January, but that, duh, 13:15 is a good time for an indoor 5000 in January? Such insight! Such a contribution!
And you are saying I am the non-contributor?
Moron.

Low bar, my friend, low bar.
Have you even HEARD of American-Born Distance Runner Syndrome?

I prefer American Distance Runner. Lagat is no American and never will be. Just another guilty doping cheater (unlike Good King Rupp, who is simply the best of all the American distance runners. He picks and chooses his races because he can- because he is the best and not a cheating dopper like Lagat and Gebriwet).

I know there's been evidence of Lagat doping, but are you just assuming Hagos Gebrhiwet dopes?
Don't use my name, bro.

He's a known awful troll and there is no evidence of Lagat doping.

Well, at least we're ALL agreed that Rupp will DNS.

Only if he's injured. Salazar makes it sound like he's definitely chasing records, so if Rupp falls short, it's only because Salazar set the bar too high or overtrains him. Whether it's indoor or outdoor, I believe Rupp will set lifetime bests this year over most, if not all distances, excluding the marathon.
If Salazar is correct about Rupp aiming to go under 3:49.9, the kid is fit. 3:49 for Rupp. Can you imagine? IF he has that fitness, he will run around 8:05-7 for the deuce and will likely take down the 5k record as well.

I don't know where this idea comes from. I don't have the numbers, but it definitely seems like Rupp competes and finishes at least as often as any other American distance runner.
Could you name a few top level American 10K guys who have showed up and raced more frequently than Rupp over the past 3-5 years?
Number of races in 2013:
Rupp: 15
Lagat: 14
True: 14
Derrick: 10
Ritz: 9

It's been a while since I've seen one go this deep. Thank you for that.
Nobody needs to hear your lurid fantasies.
