Hello Masters Runners,
I have questions regarding the Masters designation and age. I admit to being a little confused about what a Masters runner actually is? From looking at the USATF website, it looks like they (our governing body) have classified a Master as someone at the 35 year old threshold.
Twenty years ago, when I was a much younger man, and still in the open division, the 35-39 was a pseudo-category that they called a sub-masters runner-and it really didn't mean anything as this age range still competed against the open athletes for prizes etc. Now, it seems, they classify that as a masters?
It used to be that 40 years of age was a magic number that you turned that would allow you to actually win a division/age group again after having been witness to the slow and inevitable deterioration of your running prowess and glory.
So is 40 still it, or did I miss the reclassification? As I mount a comeback of sorts at the age of 40, will I be competing against 35 year olds for everlasting Masters glory and what is the rule when “major” races talk about “Masters Money?” Thanks in advance for any answers!
