it seems weird to describe this as anybody "dropping" anybody... nick's goal is probably just to get nike to get him more money than they offered.

If Nick is leaving Nike it's because another shoe company is paying him more, not because he's been planning it for a year.
This is a business. Nick has a silver medal. His contract is up. This likely is his final contract. He'd be an idiot not to go with who will pay him the most.
His agent has been planning for more than a year. Nick wants to professionalize the sport of track and field , make a living above the poverty line. Given his chosen event his value is limited. Only a hand full of track meets are televised , track and field is poorly marketed and under funded.
An elite 800 runner does not have the value of a 1500/miler , a 5/10k cross over to roads have more value as a marathoner brings additional value. Ritz a great example of good value. Nick has to run more miles plain and simple to increase his value back to Brooks. Another 800 title means little to anybody in the translation of selling more shoes.
First of all, shut yer yap assduck. Second, nike is cleaning the drug cabinet to make room for new and better peds.

It can't be all about selling more shoes. How many shoes could a cabbage like rupp possibly sell? I would never buy any nikes exactly for who they sponsor.
It's not making room for young blood it's branding. Alan Webb is worth more because people talk about him. Some young kid brings nothing to the company.
Plus he is an attention whore with a big mouth that causes trouble for Nike, drop his metro ass.
no Nike is not cleaning house. all those contracts ended after Dec. 31, 2013 because that was when they were scheduled to end. The whole "I don't have a sponsor anymore" thing from symmonds was just to get more people talking about him before he signed the Brooks contract. If he had re-signed with Nike, he probably would have done it before christmas and it would not have been newsworthy (even to the running community).

I think the silver medal was his peak and Nike knows that.
Ridiculous post, in so many ways.

He's brilliant at marketing, and so is Meb. Kudos for brig smarter than Nike and leaving.
It can't be about Nike "dropping" people. It's a two-way street. If the athlete were willing to take a bare bones contract, don't you think Nike would give it to them if they had a shred of upside? People always see these athletes as victims, but they're not. They're businesses.

What A Run wrote:It seems more likely that Symmonds dropped Nike in a belief that he can do better with one or more new sponsors.
If that is the case it will be interesting to see what he does.
However judging by all his comments about his plans for 2014 with his coach and OTC...it would not follow that Symmonds chose to leave Nike on his own. It makes no sense after flaunting his goals for this year and often touting and mentioning his coach at OTC.
What say you now A Duck? Has it sunk in yet?

Obviously this has been known to Nick for a long time. If not, he wouldn't have been calling Nike and its employees "bullies" on Twitter weeks ago (and they would/could have made him take it down).
Symmonds doesn't need to go to the roads to bring value. He has to be a medal contender in the advertising run-up to 2016, and be interesting to the casual audience. He will be both.
Unfortunately, Nick refused to get on the medical program that would have allowed him to run 1:41 or better.
We cut our losses at the right time.
