ok, super n00b here. I've never run a 1/2 marathon, and want to on 1/4/13 (LA). I was doing 3 mi 5-6 days per week 2-3 months ago, but in late October I developed shin splints, and can't seem to shake them. they get better to where I don't notice them at all if I take 2-3 days off running, then one 3-mi run on pavement and I'm done (medial tibial pain the next day at rest, terribly bothersome). tried minimalist shoes, nb1400s, lunaracers...not a big difference among different shoes. treadmill running helps--less shock--but there's only one treadmill in my complex and it's not always available.
To get a ballpark about my terrible running capabilities, I think I run about 8 minute miles. hence my handle. don't laugh.
things I've tried:
R--took a 1.5 week break during this time I've been dealing with shin splints
I--occasionally
C--every night, often during day too, with compression stockings
meds--aleve as needed, a few times a week
So now it's 12 days until the half and my longest run at or near pace has been 6 miles. but that's nowhere near the 9-11 mi run I wanted to have under my belt.
what should I do? keep training 3 mi every day/every other day hoping my shin splints don't flare up and hope I somehow make it 13.1 miles next saturday? or take another 1-week break hoping to get rid of the splints completely, and train hard-ish the 5 days prior to the half? or forget the half marathon completely?
again, I realize half marathons at my pace are casual training runs for tons of you on here, so any help for a beginner is much appreciated.
thank you!!!
