I have noticed lately more and more runners are in the high-carb camp and they try to fuel up on carbs before their runs, e.g. by drinking 32oz of Gatorade, eating a couple bananas, popcorn, etc.
There are numerous studies that document the short term benefit of doing so. You can clearly run a harder workout (tempo run, intervals) when your glycogen storage is topped up and eating gels during a long run will help you maintain your pace.
Personally, I have come around and changed my opinion. I do no longer carb load for endurance building workouts (anything from ez 6 miles to LR up to 2.5h). I will still fuel up for tempos and intervals, those are hard enough as it is.
But for me, fueling up for LR and ez runs have proven counterproductive.
Instead, I will consume some carbs right after all my runs.
