800m runner Mark Wieczorek's team won NXN and he went on the awards stand wearing a big Brooks headband.
Everyone else at NXN is decked out in Nike gear.

Mark is a boss
Didn't see it, but anyone giving a middle finger to N*ke is good with me. Make crappy running shoes and are a bully in the industry.
I don't think he was trying to stick it to Nike, he is just sponsored by Brooks so it makes sense.
I also find it funny how he appears to have coached his kids after the Washington State meet. That is a big no-no here in the Evergreen State. I hope no one reports it. But If anyone does Mark could be losing his head coach job.

I saw enough Pearl Izumi gloves that I thought they were a sponsor.
Nike puts out a great deal of effort to create an incredible experience for the kids. I consider it a poor gesture.
Anything that helps to put a bully in its place is NOT in poor taste.

Nike can erect tents and billboards and banners as race sponsors have always done without complaining about the free will of the participants in their carefully scripted marketing event.
Before won't the Wayzta girls went up there was an official who gave a girl a Nike headband to wear instead of her Under Armor one.

Are you kidding me? Wieczorek is sponsored by Brooks. Better believe he's going to wear their gear during one of the few moments in a year when gets any real exposure.

Yeah, really. I mean they sponsor a national championship for our sport and pay for all the athletes to go to Portland for a few days and run a real national championship. And to add to that those idiots sponsor the NY State Federation Meet and give everyone a spike bag.
Imagine the nerve of them, how evil- what a big bully they are helping high school kids and helping the sports of XC and track.
Sheesh.
It does appear to be a violation of WIAA rules. When I was in the same situation I was willing to be fined or fired, because I was going to be there with my kids regardless of those rules. It didn't happen. I hope nothing happens to him.
Nike deserves slightly less credit for their generosity than Anheuser-Busch deserves for sponsoring the PGA tour, since Anheuser-Busch not only brings the athletes together to play, but also pays huge prizes and lets them drink Anchor Steam if they prefer Anchor Steam.
It is not about Wieczorek. He can obviuosly where what wants.
I am not sure why you would want to do anything to be critical of an organization that gave you an opportunity to showcase your team. I believe it is called respect.
When thousands of people show up to help you promote your product, you are the one who owes respect.
I highly doubt the Nike execs actually watched the internet feed of NXN. And even if they did, who cares? THat feed was watched by a miniscule fraction of shoe consumers.
As long as they get a big group of elite HSers all jazzed up about going to NIKE cross nationals each year, it's mission accomplished. THey're building brand loyalty with young impressionable folks.

That was really great of them, since there wasn't already a national championship!
As a High School Coach that has been to the meet twice as a team, we stopped attending because my top athletes hated it. Of the 14 student athletes that I have taken to the meet only my back kids were impressed and that is simply because they don't have other options. Nike has used their muscle to diminish the importance of the Footlocker Meet and it is pretty sad.
