Looking for some experienced input as I try to make a break through in the marathon in 3 1/2 weeks. Here is my data:
42 years old - Trying to BQ (3:15) and actually get in the race (sub 3:13?)
6 past marathons (over 5 years) ranging from 3:41 to 3:29 on a typical 35 up to 48 mile per week 20 week build. Average running when not in a build was always 30ish miles per week.
In 2013 however, I started a consistent base on 1/1/13. By June / July I was in the low 60's per week. I started my marathon focus in August and have built through the high 60's, through the 70's, and I am about to "peak" with about 4 weeks right at 80 to 84 per week. The build is very similar to the Pfitz type workouts, including (4) "long hard" runs total. The last one of those was 6 easy (8:20ish) + 16 fast (first mile was 7:16, last was 6:46) and I felt really really good on that 22 miler.
Races: In April, while just easy base building, I PR'd my half with a 1:31:43. In July, hit a hot hilly 10k in 41:39. Last Saturday I surprisingly hit a 38:04 10k. I was convinced I would not see sub 40:00 so this was a revelation.
I have a week and a half of work and then a 2 week taper for the Dallas marathon.
I am finally confident that I have a decent chance of hitting about a 3:12 or so. But all the "calculators" I can find suggest around 2:55 to 2:58.
I do better in 26.2 by starting 1 minute slower than race pace and taking 5 to 6 miles to reach pace, then run under a bit, then try to hold on after mile 20.
My question: (finally) Is a sub 3 realistic or am I taking a chance on blowing up and should stick more to the 3:12? 3:12 is the A-goal. But sub 3 is my personal holy grail (I know I know.... it's no big deal for most folks). It is late in the game to be thinking this way but my 10k got me to thinking.
Let 'er rip with advice and all the great sarcasm please. Thanks!
