Yes, OF COURSE we all know that 30 seconds is a long, long way to improve in a mile (particularly from 4:13 to the WR), but this is COVERAGE of our sport, which we continuously complain is undercovered.
If "30 seconds from the world record" was the hook a reporter used to make Joe Reader care about a guy running in circles, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM WITH THAT?
A few thousand real runners (including him) know he has a way to go, and the rest of the world reads about a guy working hard and chasing his goals. Sounds OK to me.
