some believe that all patients with VCD are crazy, but the typical presentation is shortness of breath when breathing in with normal expiration. personally, i think anyone with vcd who is older than a baby first needs some counseling. if that doesn't work, then botox.
Hey man I have VCD and there are athletes I have heard of (collegiate swimmers) that have done VCD therapy and it has improved a lot. I am run in college in Georgia and am going to be doing some therapy this spring.
Some good places to check out would be UNC ENT (ear, nose, throat) or Emory. They could give you some contact I am sure depending on your location. I hope that helps.
My brother has this. I used to think he was just a wuss when he insisted on ditching all of our runs because he "couldn't breath."
Long story short, this doesn't happen anymore. He saw a speech therapist who gave him breathing exercises.
I would find speech therapists in your area, and find out who is bet for vocal cord dysfunction.
A big yes to speech therapy! It has worked for my daughter. Will she ever be as fast as she was? Only time will tell.
I have Vochal Chord Dysfunction and am a sub 3:40 1500m runner. Luckily mine is not severe and only bothers me during exercise. I have bad breathing problems in the cold and when allergies are bad, mostly coughing and poor race/workout performance. I found out I had it when asthma meds weren't working, they tested me by shoving a camera up my nose while riding an exercise bike as this is about the only VCD can be detected. Breathing exercises from a speech pathologist help a lot, especially during an attack. You breathe out slowly against resistance by pursing your lips, this creates back pressure that opens your vocal chords back up.
It makes a whistling noise while inhaling when having an attack, or a feeling of just not being able to inhale properly without explanation.
Female coach having affair with male runner. Should I report it?
