Sorta agree with you. Although I don't see him as awkward and anti social. Perhaps because he is not masculine or good looking you perceive that as being awkward. Symmonds comes off as "light in the loafers" if you know what I mean. Tries to over compensate with marketing dates with the likes of Paris Hilton. He is well spoken in the same insincere way of an ARod. These things all hurt his marketability.
Salazar is the paycheck for Rupp. He has the charisma and the looks. Can't really think of any distance runner with Madison Ave potential. Maybe the awe shucks persona of Wheating could have paid off, but he has perform at the olympics first.
This is right on the money.
Symmonds is not as marketable as Rupp. His constant attempts to bring attention to himself come across as immature. Perhaps the reason there is debate here is because personality changes as you age. When I was younger I'd probably have thought what Symmonds was doing was badass and good for running. The reality is that most adults are not obsessed with being a badass and will equate Symmonds with some arrogant jerk they have to deal with at the office. When I see Symmonds I want to barf and change the channel. And don't get me wrong, I totally respect what he's done on the track and was happy to see him do well this summer. He just reminds me of a lot of people who I don't really like.
Rupp on the other hand is pretty boring. Especially when we are young, we have a natural tendency to want the guys who should be our heroes to be magnetic personalities. Bob Kennedy was similarly bland. But the reality for Nike is that Rupp, while boring, is very effective at being a factor in races, even more than Kennedy was. Rupp is the face of USA long distance running, and his association with Nike makes a strong subliminal statement. Even the haters here are obsessed with what Rupp will do next. There is a thread every other day wondering what would Rupp do at every imaginable distance. With Symmonds you don't see people wondering what he would do for a 10k.
Nike is one of the top brands in the world, and the absolute leader in athlete endorsement. I'm pretty sure they know better than any of us how to value an athlete.
Last thought: while I am aware of Symmonds and all of the antics he's been up to the last few years, at this moment I'm not actually sure what shoe company he runs for. I would have to look it up. If he had multiple sponsors all over his jersey, I'd be even more confused. With Rupp, I would not have to do this...because Rupp = Nike.
