If that is true - do you have a source for this assertion as well as the one re Symmonds' earnings? - it is a bit strange that he would earn more than Symmonds (I have no idea how "7 figures" compares to other runners of his ilk). I do wish Rupp would put more effort into developing his interview skills; I recall after he lost the 3K to Gebrhiwet at the NBGP, he referred to the latter as "the Ethiopian". I mean, come one, learn your competitors' names! Also, take a cue from your buddy Mo, who one can't help but root for he's so charismatic.

I'm a left wing dude, but really: read up on market economics. Galen makes what he makes because the people writing the checks think he is worth it.

Is the system a good one? No. But don't blame Rupp. Blame the federations that make rules that ensure THEY get all the money and the athletes don't.

I don't know what Rupp makes, but if it's a lot, I say good for him.

He's done a great job for years. He's a nice guy, too. Ok, he doesn't run his mouth, he runs races - against the best. He has become so good that a fourth place at the Olympics in the 10k is a disappointment, but, that's damn good running.

I don't begrudge him 7 figures - I'm happy for him.

Bolt makes plenty of money. The rules aren't stopping Symmonds from making money.

And why would you or anyone else have an issue with that? You have morons riding the bench in the NBA making $10mil a year and you're going to complain because the 10,000 AR holder might make a couple of mil a year? Don't be an ass. Just because Rupp came in 4th at the last Olympics does not nullify the silver medal he won at the preceding Olympics.

I bet the top 50 golfers make more than that. Hundreds of players in each of the major teams sports do. Why shouldn't the second/fourth best 10k runner in the world make money? Particularly since it has been so long since an American did so well in the longe distances.

Well Symmonds and his sponsors will be happy to learn that his temp tattoo and other ideas for advertising sponsorships are actually allowed at major meets.

Also: silly Yohan Blake and his sponsors for taking off the custom watch for the Olympic finals. Those silly, silly people seemed to think that the athletic federations sold the sponsorship rights for timepieces and thus kept the money for themselves and forbade athletes from profiting from sponsorship deals.

10K is one event. I'm don't think rupp rates as one of the top 100 T&F athletes in the world. He might be among the 30 or so overall distance runners (in 2012...a bit worse in the ranks for 2013)
