I want to travel, a lot. I don't have a car and don't feel like renting one. Do you have any horror or better yet, positive stories from hitch hiking?

Once this guy was hitchhiking on the side of the rode. Apparently his bike chain had broken (he was comuting to work), and needed a lift. I stopped to help him, took out my chainsaw, and destroyed his bike before his eyes. I threw him in the back of my pickup and dropped him off at work. His bike was ruined.
I have used this trick for years: dress up to hitch.
Put on some clean non-jeans(like khakis) and a collared shirt.
You will look so different from the rest.
I remember one couple picked me up on the Interstate. The wife said, "We never pick up hitchhikers, but you remind us of our son."
About 20 years ago I was living in Ireland. In the middle of nowhere and I was without a car. If I wanted to get around, I was either walking or hitching a ride.
Setting all of the safety issues aside, it was an incredible way to see the country. I met some of the coolest people and shared some great experiences. Some days I'd get lucky and get picked up shortly after heading out, other times I'd have to walk quite a distance before landing a ride. Too many stories to tell, but never once had a problem or regretted my decision to hop in a stranger's car.
It's funny though...I was perfectly at ease hitchhiking in a foreign country but I wouldn't think about doing it here in the US. Way too many maniacs who would be looking for victims for their basement dungeon.
