is chicago harder than it is renowned for?
I'm not sure what you mean by Chicago being "easy" or not. Obviously, it's a marathon, which under the best circumstances can be pretty grueling. After that obvious point, I will say that Chicago is a flat course. The weather has also cooperated in recent years. I've run the Chicago Marathon for 3 of the last 5 years, and it's usually cool and overcast. If you are more specific, you may get a better response!
are there any hills or rises that slow you down near the end or is it all dead flat?
There is actually a smallish incline in the last couple of miles. It is gradual, and nobody outside of Chicago or another very flat area would consider it much of a hill!
There is an incline on Roosevelt - maybe the 25.5 mark. As stated previously under any other circumstances it's hardly noticeable. However I remember dragging my ass up that hill last year thinking it was a monster. It just comes at a bad time in the race. Other than that, the course is fast and flat. It's a great race. Good luck!!
Not harder than renowned for. Flat and fast. Lined with tons of spectators, entertainment and support. Carey wants everyone (runners, spectators and volunteers) to have a good time. Chicago does it right. You'll love it.
Good Luck!
