Maria De Lourdes Mutola goofed! She remained at the back of the pack and kicked with about 300m to go and when it mattered most, she didn't have that energy to coast her to gold. She hasn't been quite fit of late and in my view, she should have hung with the top 3 or 4 guys and kick with 120m to go. It was all about tactics.
It's time for a changing of the guard in this event. No need for any tears over Mutola.
It think we saw a subpar Mutola, but hey - the one who continues to goof is Miles-Clark. She by far is has the fastest 400 in the field, (49 something) and yet continues to be the sacrificial lamb and go to the front.
800 at a national level is not won from the front. I cannot figure out JJ's strategy - why doesn't she wait and try to mow them down? Her turnover never changes - she never fades, but she never has enough because she leads.
I don't get their strategy - it never works in International Competition and she has the talent.
