You realize she isn't in Detroit, right?
What is most impressive about this is not the time, as 451 is probably achievable by quite a few masters of that age. The really impressive thing is the CONSECUTIVE nature of this, the ability to stay uninjured and motivated for 38 years. As an often injured runner, I am very jealous!

IMO, it would be much, much harder for a working stiff (salesman, doctor, lawyer, garbageman, whatever) to keep up the motivation for all these consecutive years with demands of young families at some point (presumably) and long (or not) work hours.
Good on Steve for managing to avoid having to work in one those miserable jobs to make a living. I wish that I had been able do the same ...
Thanks, Ghost of Ashenfelter. But I've got 40 years, not 41, and Steve Spence would crush me at any distance. I've been scraping under 5:00 lately--4:57.3 this year at age 55--and I would be dropped after a half-mile or less. Maybe it has something to do with Steve's ability to run my PR for 5K eight times in a row when we were in our prime.
If you're really the Stuart they're talking about, big congrats, man! Keep on rocking!
Thanks, tony soprano; yes, I'm the guy. I only have more years of sub-5 than Steve Spence because I'm four years older; barring the unlikely, he'll have 44 years when he's my age and I'll be well over 5's.
Ghost of Ashenfelter was on the satellite European circuit and actually ran some near-Spence-like times on the track, while I was on the UC Irvine B-team being lapped by people like Ralph Serna and Eric Hulst in the 10,000.
I appreciate the encouragement. I've got a bunch of minor-league streaks going--it's a good way to stay motivated and to help limit the slowdown.
Rock around the (inexorable) clock--
Stuart
Is Spence still on that sea plant diet? He was only eating things like kelps and stuff like that according to the RW article during his peak years. I think right after his 2nd or 3rd place finish at WCs.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
