The winner was from Uganda, don't think Eldoret is laughing at anything with the performance of its Kenyans
Actually, given that Kiprotich trains in Kenya they are definitely cheering for him. They'd rather see a Kenyan win, but they believe you have to come to Kenya to be a champion, so they are happy to see a guy like Kiprotich win. They cheer for Mo Farah for the same reason.
WAHOOWA!! Nice run Jeff, and all competitors!
This race right there, the WC marathon, reveals more about these athletes and their patriotism than any other sport. These individuals train for these races with much smaller payout then the other races. $60k for the winner and no appearance fee makes this race really about athletes who care about representing their country and running to win.
I love the WC marathon and can't wait to see what Eggleston can do in a fall marathon!
Is that highlights link messed up for anyone else? I can't get it to play without auto-scrolling to next video within a second or two.
There is a longer version 38 minutes of the marathon here: http://runningsplits.blogspot.com/2013/08/2013-moscow-world-championships-mens_17.html
It's so weird when the Kenyans start posting on here.
So, looking at countries placing in the top twenty:
Ethiopia and Japan: 4 athletes
Uganda: 3 athletes
Brazil, Eritrea, and Kenya: 2 athletes (Kenya only one in the top ten)
USA, Spain, Canada: 1 athlete
Is anyone else surprised by the Japanese contingent? Or that only two Kenyans in the top 20?
Nice showing by Eggleston! Looks like he ran smart today.
The Brazilians placing 2 in the top 20 was a bit of a surprise.
I think this race is a waste. They're never going to get all the best in it because of the potential paydays and guaranteed appearance fees of the big city marathons.
I'd like to see a 1/2 marathon with a team championship.

Kiprotich gave Desisa "the weave". I think Desisa thought it was funny.

Not really. Five 2:08 guys and four of them make the top 20? That's not so surprising, is it?
From the Elite Marathoning FaceBook page:
1) Kiprotich 2:09:51 (1:05:13 / 1:04:38)
2) Desisa 2:10:12 (1:05:12 / 1:05:00)
3) Tola 2:10:23 (1:05:12 / 1:05:11)
4) Kebede 2:10:47 (1:05:12 / 1:05:35)

20) Watson 2:16:28 (1:07:10 / 1:09:18)
Don't think he thought it was funny. It cost him the race. It looked like Kiprotich was so annoyed with Desisa riding his heels that he tried to use the camera motorcycle to "scrub" him off of him at about 2'31" into the highlight reel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z0TkLnchfc

What happened to Kawauchi?

Dropped back really early and finished 18th in 2:15:35 - Probably the worst for him was that Maeda finished 17th, ten seconds ahead.
Kiprotich's zig zap weave was totally awesome.
Notice he did these coming up to corners; he'd take off going away from the corners, then veer sharply in a straight line towards them, gaining some distance, without changing his pace but causing Desisa to change his.
