Lets bring up the subject of recruiting (and walking-on). Times seem to have changed so much. Before, in the old days, a 4:30 mile seemed to be enough to be able to walk on to top programs such as Oklahoma State, Stanford and Colorado but now this is not the case. The depth of HS running has grown incredibly, and it continues to grow! That is because of this different generation of training (high mileage in HS).
The Oklahoma state coach has mentioned that he use to love working with 9:40 2 milers, but since there are so many faster runners that want to walk on, he just doesn't have the space to have them.
At the moment, I would assume it would take a sub 4:20 mile to be able to walk on to these programs, and a sub 4:10 to get recruited. To be exact, lets get lists of specific programs with their recruiting and walking on standards. Obviously, these marks are not set in stone, so i'll just make an estimate.
Based on interviews I have seen and information I have gathered this is my assumption about the Colorado program..
Walking on:
800m: 1:55?
1 mile: 4:18
2 mile: 9:18
Recruits with minimum or no scholarship money:
1 mile: 4:13
2 mile: 9:05
Top recruits:
1 mile: 4:10
2 mile: 9:00
*(Correct me if you have more accurate info)*
Does anyone want to take a shot at any other programs? Oregon? Oklahoma State? Portland? Texas?
What about those great programs with tough admission standards? Stanford? Notre Dame? Duke? Princeton? Columbia? I would assume that these programs would have a bit easier walk on standards, as long as they are admitted of course.
