Can I get some info on their running program? I'm a Northerner. Would I have something to worry about going to South Carolina for school?

Really? You went to their website and couldn't find *any* info on their running program?

There are daily hangings of gull-durn Yankees here in Souf Cackalackey.
Stay out.
Okay well they have a huge recruiting class coming in this year. Is this the norm for them? Because I never see any Furman guys doing anything. Their website isn't going to tell me anything about their coach's mileage, training philosophies, etc. I know of their post-collegiate group, which stems to have some pretty incredibly runners (Bolas, Leslie, See, etc.)
Greenville is a great town with lots of folks from up north. The first year lacrosse team will have plenty of guys and girls from up north. Furman is a good school.
They just got a new coach who came from Ohio State. The incoming freshmen are his first recruiting class. They also got a large donation that gave them more scholarships this year.
Furman head coach and assistant came from Ohio State. Most coaches wouldn't leave a major program to go to a tiny one so I suspect there was some fishy business going on or the coach was to be fired.
Either way, furman is located in a nice area and will be very hot and humid at first. Once you adapt, it probably won't bother you.
If it were me and I had any other options, I would take them. Look at what the Ohio state program has(nt) done over the last several years.
Also, with such a big recruiting class coming in, unless you are very good, there is a chance you get overlooked and pushed to the background a bit.
Bottom line: choose where you want to go to school for your education. Not just running.
They left Ohio state for many reason. Mainly the excitement at Furman for having a distance based program. The budget they now have is larger than the one They had at Ohio State. They got a great deal with brooks. Furman was willing to sponsor a post collegiate running group, Oho State would never do that! Furman has also allowed them to do things like go out and by and Ultra G treamill, which Ohio State does not have. If you talk to the coaches they really feel like they can build a better distance program at Furman than you can at Ohio State. Time will tell if they are right. At the end of te day I think most people would agree that sometimes working at the big school or biggest corporation is not always the best thing. Sometimes it is nice to be in a smaller setting where people actually care about you and your team!
Really cool to see that kind of thing happening at Furman. I've been saying it since Gary was hired there: I'd love to see Furman become the Iona of the South.
He got fired at Ohio State. I personally don't care about that fact, but it is a fact. That is why he is at Furman. You can check the Columbus Dispatch to see the articles about it.
Not why he is there.
Reason he was fired is because Ohio State found out he and his wife had already agreed to take jobs at Furman at the end of the year.
Nothing Furman does, even as a smaller school surprises me. Furman has serious old money.
everyone knows Gary is a great coach, but is still a slimeball. Furman got a crap ton of money from alum that wanted to invest in the distance program. Gary is getting paid more at Furman than he did at Ohio State. Oh, and his wife got a coaching position as well, something Ohio State didn't do.
