Hypothetical 5 year long term plan for someone in their late twenties to early thirties who wants to race everything from a mile to a marathon and race them well. Said runner has been running 2.5 years with prs in high 16s for 5k and low 35s for 10k) but very little speed (~60-61 400m).
So five years after starting is when this athlete (let's call him, "me") is looking to start running pretty well but halfway though and things just aren't looking that promising. Not being able to crack a 60s 400m just seems abysmal at this point.
How would you structure a five year plan and what would you emphasize? Is it more important to focus on that speed aspect (especially with such a slow 400m) in order to carry that over throughout the years or is it more important to build up that aerobic base to carry into the longer races in those 4th and 5th years?
Or would moderating the mileage a bit more to simultaneously improve aerobic conditioning while allowing for speed development be better?
weekly mileage averages so far:
1st 6 months: 24 mpw
2nd 6 months: 30 mpw
3rd 6 months: 39 mpw
4th 6 months: 56 mpw
5th 6 months: 60 mpw
6th 6 months: three weeks in: ~70 mpw
All of the above has been focused on 5k-10k work, generally a long run 12-14 miles) and two strength workouts a week (marathon pace and 10k, or threshold and 10k/5k) with very little speed (maybe max of one mile total of 3k pace every couple of weeks).
Just getting a bit frustrated now. Honestly not sure if I could even break a 5 min mile at this point so am wondering if it's worth building up mileage when I race so slowly. I had a 1+ min 5k pr and 3 min 10k PR going after avg. 56 mpw for six months but I seem to start having issues around the 70 mpw mark (especially PF) and that's frustrating, too.
So with another couple of years (or much longer, time frame not that important if there is consistent yearly improvement), should I start focusing on a different area (specifically speed) now? How? Cut down the distance? Focus on sprints and/or mile paced work? Less volume but higher overall speed? More workouts? Find a new sport?
