The 2170 is a very popular running shoe, and most runners do run in that shoe, or an older model.
If anything the Brooks Adrenaline would be second, or tied for second, in terms of popularity. The Zoom Elite is meant more for forefoot, light pronators, that does not fit the need for about 99% of most runners. So in the Zoom Elite is probably more of your personal preference.
I think your talking about the new zoom elite, which sucks....
The old one before they changed it was the best shoe i have ever run, namely the air zoom elite 4. I have also run in the asics 21 series and like them as well, I especially like the update gt 2000 because it has a very similar feel to that of the old zoom elite 4.
Yes for the GT-2170. Best ever. Although the 2160's can be found for $60 sometimes and that is all you need.
It is now discontinued and I need a replacement (the few remaining ones out there don't come in my 4E size). Which current Asics shoe is the closest to it?
Wow, I am genuinely surprised that the LRC crowd would call a heavy (14oz !), high-heeled full-on stability shoe more or less designed for heel strikers (all sorts of their GEL stuff in the heel; the newest model proudly touts even more GEL in the heel) the best shoe of all time. They even feature a large hard plastic medial post for added motion control.
I have nothing against shoes like this - seriously. I really don't. I've worked in a running store, and I recommend them and others like them for lots of runners. I am sure they are great for the type of shoe they are supposed to be.
But the people I recommend them to are people with not-the-greatest gaits (who need lots of stability and some motion control) who heel strike. Heavier runners, too - these are boats, and won't break down as quickly as a lighter shoe. I will steer them away from the lighter flats, or even the transitioning-to-flats lightweight trainers that many of them are initially looking at, because frankly, their weight and stride make them a bad idea for an everyday trainer.
Again - nothing against them. It's just an eye-opener to read the LRC crowd talking about it like it's the best shoe of all time.
interesting - no offense, but: wrote:

I'm not a big fan of the 2170, and I agree it's heavy, but it's nowhere near 14 oz.

I'm on my 4th pair of 2170s and have another pair on hand that is still new. I like the 2E width. When my 2170s are worn out I'll probably try the GT-2000. Don't know much about it but I think that is the closest Asics has.

The GT-2000 is the direct replacement for the GT-2170.
