Were you born yesterday or the day before? The amount of stupidity and disrespect in this country, world, whatever, is astonishing but totally believable.

yeah it makes me think the whole thing is a ruse. same person posting over and over
nothing to see here.
Woah thats quite aggressive. I live in hoboken. I was hit by sandy too. And even then, i donated to the cause. As far as vets go, i have several family members who are vets and give to that cause as well. Unfortunately, big heartedness is not the issue here. People likely signed up for this MARATHON, at least in part, due to their love of running. They then logged hundreds of hours, skipped out on happy hours, were up before the sun, and battled injuries -- all in order to run this event. All to be told a week before that not only is it no longer on, but that "it would be unfair to ask for your money back". I think not. The whole situation has been, and continues to be, handled poorly. It is poor public relations at best and criminal at worst. The errors do not belong to the runners, but rather the organization. Refunds should have been provided no questions asked, allowing the runners to decide what to do with THEIR OWN money. Next time do your homework before hosting "an event of this magnitude".
Also, good job with the four hour marathon jab. I didnt realize you were in a position to be snarky.
These morons were at least smart enough to register their domain anonymously:

If I were involved I would file a complaint with the police in one or more of these cities and maybe with the Better Business Bureau to see if they can figure out who's responsible.
I doubt "the organizer" posting here has any involvement with the race but I would think it's pretty clearly some kind of a scam.
It may be worth contacting local news organizations and seeing if any of them wants to write an article looking into who organized this.
Thank you again for your donations and your complete understanding and patiense. Since you live in Hoboken you can obviously afford this small token donation towards a great cause that benefits many needy individuals. And sorry about the 4 hour comment earlier, it has been a stressful day.

I never respond to these threads because they inevitably become personal attacks. The thing is, you don't know me. You have no idea what my means are and what i can/cannot afford. Either way, however, it doesn't matter. This isn't about the $100 we spent on the marathon. This is about the hours of training, the personal triumph we hope to accomplish, the butterflies we get right before the gun goes off, the feeling we get when we cross the finish line, and the sacrifice and discipline we've instilled in ourselves to get there. This is about how when someone guarantees a service for a fee and then fails to provide the service, the appropriate response is first and foremost an apology, followed by a return of the fee. The appropriate response is NOT to withhold the funds, guilt trip people, and/or personally attack them. Further, the issue isnt whether we should or should not be contributing to the veterans. But, since you insist on making it a political issue, I'll say this: we live in America. And one of the great things about this country is that we get to choose where our money goes. The other great thing about it is that we have laws against fraud and theft.
Cancelled a week out for construction issues???
And pops out with "no refunds look at the registration!!"
F that noise. SCAM.
F New Jersey too for good measure.
I'm sure half the people driving through that craphole couldn't even tell anything happened.
Something is really fishy, and that website looks like it was designed in the late '90s.
There are 2 great things about America:
1) We get to choose where our money goes.
2) We have laws against fraud and theft.
They should have been a bit more subtle. Started a marathon with a yet-to-be-determined theme for the year and associated charity. Then choose a theme like "Springtime for Hitler" and pick a neo-Nazi charity. No one would come and run.
They don't audit charities that lose money!
Does anyone know what is or can be done about this occurrence?
I sent them an email on Monday with a question I had. There was no mention of even the possibility of the race being cancelled in the response I received from them. Not even a hint.
I emailed weds morning about a refund. No response.

Of course it's a troll. What website do you think you're on?

I think most other first world countries operate like that.

Dispute the charge with your credit card company. If you want to do something that affects more than just you, contact the attorney general (or other similarly named public offical in NJ)
TROLL? You have no idea how good looking I am...
Just for that I am taking money away from the make a wish foundation...satisfied?
What a complete scam! Last minute issues do arrise from the likes of road closures, flooding, utility work, etc from time to time, and it's then up to the RD to simply route the race around the problems and measure the new course for certification.
I doubt the organizers had any intention of holding the race. They're just counting on some folks not demanding a refund or agreeing to a one year postponement for a race that will never be held again. Then they walk away with the procedes.

If Jersey City said that it wouldn't provide permits or police, that's probably not something the RD can just work around.
However, that doesn't address the quality of the planning, whether the organizers did what the could have to anticipate problems, how certain they were that they could hold the race before taking people's money, etc. It also sounds like the money may just be shifted over to pay the costs for their 5k, which wouldn't be right.
