I'm 22, got a little tired of distance running, but I wouldn't really say burnt out. I just ran my last college season in the fall and suddenly I want to be able to sprint and jump and in general be stronger.
I have an athletic background--varsity basketball and baseball in high school--and this summer I am playing in a frisbee, basketball, and baseball league. I really just want to forget about competitive distance running for a while. I still run a few miles (2-5 miles) a few days a week, but I've been doing short explosive sprints at least a couple times a week (8-10 with long rest), along with lifting, which I've never really done extensively before. I'm jumping and sprinting about as well as I have ever done.
I guess I'm just wondering if anybody has ever done anything like this coming off of several XC/Track seasons and then returned to middle distance or distance training after a year or more. What kind of differences did you notice? For good or for worse? I'll be staying really active, so I don't feel as though it will take me a ton of time to get back into decent shape.
