It took me 5 years in before things started clicking by pure accident. I had far given up by then and was running for the enjoyment of it, not that was the trigger. It just took me a while to discover all the limitations for my own body and what my body naturally does real well versus what my body does badly on the other end of the bell curve. When it clicks though its like you are on the freeway of improvement.
