Only 3% of Americans took part in the revolution. All major changes in the course of human history have been driven by a highly motivated tiny minority of people.
The US army didn't defeat the british. The French army and navy did.
It's certainly not as clear cut as that, but the French did help.
So that's your answer right there. American civilians team up with external forces who want the present government out of power ( and they'll be no shortage of those), and voila... a new country!
