I have worked with a transnational tribe at the US-Mexico border. The Border Patrol regularly cut down the barbed wire on the tribal lands in pursuit or on patrol and never apologize or make amends, stop and harass the natives, and general show gross disrespect to people and property even though they are a sovereign people. In terms of dealing with it, they have no power. The illegal border activity there is high because of the clamp down on the main supply routes outside of the tribal national boundary.
A positive experience crossing the border into Canada. We were leaving Glacier National Park and want to the seasonal BC stopped and waited for the guy to walk from the office to the booth and wave us up. We gave him our papers and he asked is we had any alcohol, yep we have about a dozen beers. Do you have any drugs? No sir. Do you have any firearms? No sir. Well that doesn't sound very fun.
We laughed as he waved us through, easiest crossing ever took less than five minutes.
Bored US Border guard going into Alaska on a remote dirt highway. Very aggressive interrogation of myself and my grandpa. I had an SLR camera around my neck "Where'd you get that camera? Did you buy it in Canada?" That was back in 1990. Curious if that guard was still around post 9/11, and if so, how much he cranked up his jerkiness.
I had a $75 bottle of cologne taken in Louisville KY because it was 6 ounces. Being from nyc I was glad to see this kind of vigilance in the face of the mounting swarm of terrorists.

Probably wasn't the border patrol..
Also, $75 is too much to spend on cologne.
Canada to US outside Kingston. Family friend - a 65 yr old woman from Japan - is grilled by US border patrol. Treated like a criminal. Unnecessarily hostile, for reasons we could not comprehend.
Rojo was given the full body cavity search too. They were looking for another Robert Johnson.
I was between jobs on a nice severance package and was camping/bumming around the country hitting National Parks and shit. Zipped up to Canada and come back to the States south of Vancouver. Driving a pickup with a covered bed. Pull up to the crossing. What is your occupation? --"Nothing really these days" What were you doing in Canada---"Just bumming around and seeing the sights--I suppose you will need me to pull over"
Anyway they were polite as the went through about everything I had, missed the tiny amount of weed I had. No complaints here.

Was in a pizza place in Marfa, TX. I got up to go to the bathroom when a border patrol agent who had just finished his pizza also got up at the same time and walked in front of me. I had to stop abruptly. The border patrol agent did not say "excuse me".
Once I was in a hurry on the highway and there was this long line of cars and stuff because the border patrol was stopping everybody and shining lights in our eyes. My biggest complaint is they had a 25mph sign up about a mile in front of the check point. They could definitely have moved it closer. When I got to the checkpoint and stop sign they looked at me through their dark glasses (it was really bright under the floodlights) and waved me and all my ethnic brothers (piled under a blanket in the back seat) through. I was like 'Thank you sir, God bless you for your service,' and waved back but I was secretly I like, 'You jerk, why did you put that 25mph sign so far away?' That was a really negative experience for me.
Never a problem with the BP. Now with the USCIS... they can be real a$$holes. Especially when the port of entry is in a city full of a$$holes (NYC, Newark, Philly, DC, etc).
Haven't had any issues (knock wood), but seem to get behind in line or be with those who get all kinds of grilling/searching. I was with someone whose bags the guard went through in detail--then he looked at me and my bags and waved me right through. Another time, in line after an overseas trip, I was caught behind a man who was taken to another room to be questioned. Meanwhile I stood... and stood... and stood... and finally joined another line--which promptly closed--other lines were much longer. Even so, I was about to suck it up and join one of the long lines, but just then, the original guy came back, asked me a question or two, and sent me on my way.
I temporarily lived in southern New Mexico a few years ago. First encounter with border patrol happened when a co-worker invited me over to her house. Her husband worked for the border patrol. Him & some of his buddies who were also with the border patrol, were playing poker. I didn't know how to play so I just sat & watched. They were downing beers & kept asking if I wanted a drink. I repeatedly said no, I have to drive home. They said, ahh it's cool. If you get pulled over, tell'em you were hanging out with us. We're all cool with the police, so they'll let you go.
Encounter #2. Every time I drove through a check point (these were set up inland & not at the border) I would drive real slow & they would wave me on through. Well one time I happened to be driving home during the dark. I drove up like I always did. This time I stopped for them because the guy didn't give me the wave through motion. The guy stands in front of my car and stares at me for about 5 sec (which seemed a lot longer). Then he hit my dash twice with his club very hard. I was surprised he didn't break my window he hit it so hard. I rolled down my window & he said, "why didn't you have your window down when you approached the station?" I didn't feel like arguing with him, so I just said, "sorry sir." He made me roll all my windows down & he looked in my car. Then he opened my doors to investigate further. Finally, he said nothing and motioned with his hands that I could go on.
Prick.
