Lets do the math. The story goes that Hail started running 10k to school, home for lunch, back to school, and then back home when he was in grade school. So lets say that started when he was 6. Now, lets assume it was 5k, not 10k. So that's 12 miles per day, 5 days a week, from ages 6-18 for, let's say, 30 weeks out of the year. So he would be at 21,600 miles by the time he was 18. From 18 to 40, lets assume he has averaged 120 miles per week, 52 weeks out of the year. That seems aggressive. In the summer when he was breaking 5000 and 10000 records, he was likely running 50-60 a week as he was sharpening and racing, but regardless, let's just go with that assumption since he also likely ran more than 60 miles a week between the ages of 15 and 18, and while training for the marathon for the last decade, has probably been much higher than 120. That would put him at another 137,280, making his total 158,880. G
I don't see how Haile has run more then 160,000 miles, and challenge Frank Shorter on his number of 180,000.

- Reminder that Haile is almost certainly 5 years older than his official age - most family and friends claim he was born in 1968. That extra 5 years could be 4,000 to 10,000 miles... any other slight variations change your total a lot... 130 miles per week rather than 120 would make for another 10,000 - so you can't say with too much confidence that he's under 180k.
- Reminder that Shorter's claim (in this thread) is 170k, Baldini claimed 185k. The Brojos did the math when he retired and it seemed fathomable.
All of these lifetime mileage estimates I am assuming is way off. I know from personal experience before GPS I would go out for an hr run and would just call it 8.5 miles, if I ever went out and measured the course sometimes I would get 7.5 miles. I also would get as high as 9.5 miles. What I am saying is these are estimates and inflation, people feed off this stuff for their ego's and infamy.
The 280,000 miles is completly false and I truly don't believe it. Maybe 200,000 miles but I would need to see his full training log day by day and the course he ran it on so it could be measured via MapMyRun app.
Remember Mr Gerry Lindgren ran 350 miles a week? Again we are talking about a pathological liar that has major issues.
Why are you replying to my post claiming that you don't think that Haile can challeng Shorter's 180 000 when I just wrote that the record is Pirie's 216 000?
The typical rural Kenyan runs more miles before age 16 than Geb has run his whole life.
It's Cam.... Cam Levins.
haha yeah i was just about to say Cam Levins is gunning to take the record down
Not so sure Geb has the highest lifetime miles, but I'll bet he has more sub 5 miles than anyone. Or maybe I mean to say more quality miles. Not sure how to define that though.
The Japan marathoner they do extra mile than any kenya for me i can pick , Erick Wainana 1996 marathon medal and sydney , now doing the utlamarathon .

No, stay Grammar Hitler. They need you here -- especially the proprietors.
Remember Geb ran ~20km each day to get to school and back from quite a young age. I don't suppose anyone really knows how many miles he's run - himself included. But presumably he would be able to make a reasonably accurate estimate if he put his mind to it.
But still - some ultra runners do crazy distances, probably one of them would top the all time miles list.
Concerning the USRSA list.
I only recognize the name of Olympian Mark Covert.
How about Ron Hill's mileage?

THIS!!!!!!!!!!
Ron Hill. End of thread.
I agree. I think Shorter probably has him beat by a good margin.

I heard Frank Shorter speak, and he said he's run over 170,000 lifetime miles. I don't know of anyone who's run more. Maybe Haile has run more.
I expect both of them to live long and healthy lives.
Mark Covert calculated his lifetime miles at the end of 2011 at about 157,100 - streak info he shares with a few friends every year. And while distinguished in many ways, unfortunately for him, he was not an Olympian.
