There were plenty of others who probably worked just as hard and wanted it even more (like Jordan, obviously), but who were not favored by fate on the day, including having the talent to run 31 for 10K.
Lawi decided not to push himself since he didn't feel as good as usual, and essentially gave up on some level, thinking about indoor track while he was out there. Yet he beat all but two other runners. Some people just have the talent, pure and simple.
