The NCAA does not use the 6th man to break ties.

That's exactly what the post you quoted was saying.
I can't tell from the West Regional results if Portland is just lurking off a tight pack or is not running well. We'll see how they close.
Guess I got my answer. Pilots now showing up in top 3 teams tied with the Ducks for second at 8k.

No, the post I quoted states the poster is glad the NCAA doesn't break ties. His reason he is glad they don't break ties is because the 6th man already had his chance to affect scoring. This implies that if the NCAA did break ties the 6th man would have another chance. The 6th man would not have another chance, as where the 6th man finished has no impact on NCAA tiebreakers (when they do use them for advancement).

That's correct. It was a good meet, pretty hot for that area this time of the year which definitely took its toll on the runners, a lot of people collapsing over the last few hundred meters.
John Kellogg should have waited until after today to make his predictions. Looks like Jordan Hasay has been sandbagging it a little before today. 19:16, Wow! Goethals of Washington, who almost won the 5,000 on the track last spring was almost a minute behind her.
Well Goethals was on crutches for a stress reaction just a couple weeks ago.
But very impressive run for Jordan! It looks like she and her coach have been taking a smart path this year, improving a lot every race (which is not always the case for her)
I think it'll be a tough race next week, but she's certainly one of the favorites. D'Agostino looks like she's back and probably didn't show all her cards, and Saina, Hollander, Kroeger, Lagat, Kimaiyo, Tuliamuk...all worthy opponents.

The way that they break ties is bilateral comparisons of the runners for placing order on each team. It comes in to play in selecting the at-large berths. OSU beats OU because their #1 beats OU #1, and similarly for #2 and #3. But ties are left for first, but not so thereafter. This tie breaking rule applies to earlier meats as well in assigning points.

So if 2 or 3 or your top 3 runners beat their opposite number, then you are ranked ahead?
Or is it if 3 or more of your top 5 runners beat their opposite number that you are ranked ahead?
There are five runner positions to consider, which ever one wins (at least) three of the five comparisons wins. In the case of OU and OSU, OSU wins in 1, 2, and 3, loses 4 and 5; thus they 'win 3-2'. However, since it is for first, there is no need to determine an ordering. If they tied for second, they would have to know who is the #2 with the auto and who is the #3 with the points considerations.
Apparently not true. It's announced as a tie by both schools.

That's what he said. If it's for 1st they don't break the tie because order (1 or 2) wouldn't affect whether they advance.
I think that what I said was that if it is for 1 and 2 they both tie for first, but if it were 2 and 3 or 3 and 4, they would go to the tiebreaker to determine who advances.
got it

But then they wouldn't have been PREdictions. Actually, if you read the description, they aren't really predictions anyway. They're just subjective rankings based on what people have done through conference meets and whether they're on the way up or down heading into regionals. Until Friday, Hasay had been behind both Hollander and Kroeger all season and had to be ranked lower than them based on that.
If you also read the text in the West preview, it pretty much acknowledges that Hasay has probably been waiting for the big one and because of that it would be a surprise if Hollander is the top finisher at nationals out of the West.

This is really getting old. Washington's girls all get hurt and that seems to be part of the deal. Why make excuses for Goethels poor performance? Nearly two weeks ago she ran the Pac 12 championship race....so let's not exaggerate. She was not on crutches a couple weeks ago, and she was running much better as a freshman.
