People are going to be getting lapped. A loop is not an option.
Not if it's a 26.2 mile loop
How many hotel rooms are without power? Not a chance in hell the electrical service will be back up, in any significant way, in any less than 4 days in the area below 40th St.

Truthfully, only "elites" can afford a $300 entry fee, and in fact, many Europeans DO fly in on Monday and Tuesday.
You are going to have 50,000+ irate visitors if it's cancelled.
The field will have been seriously reduced in size due to the disruption of flight schedules, hotels which have had to close and turn away guests etc...
Also, I think NYC may not have all the EMS/Fire/Police personnel on hand due to how exhausted they will be by Sunday from dealing with the absolute calamity which has struck the city. Do you folks not realize how bad this is?
I think they will have the race but with a much reduced field.
This stupid marathon is now a victim of its own "success". It's just too ridiculously big.

I can't imagine it would be cancelled. At the very least, why not have it the next weekend?
Dude, you have no fvcking clue.
According to ABC News, race is on!!!
End of thread... Race will be on. Mary will look to get as much mileage out of the drama as possible, and so it will look like an "amazing achievement" when it happens. The only question is in which form the race will take place.. Full course or modified because obviously they are at the mercy of the subway system.
More details- lines up with what others have said. Nothing sounds certain.
Looks like it's definitely on. Medical director quoted this afternoon as saying "The city of New York and the Road Runners are committed to making sure that the marathon will occur on Sunday".
Full story at
Mayor is on tv and just said the plan is for the marathon to go on, but they'll confirm tomorrow morning. stay tuned....
Will they still hand out candy to trick or treaters tomorrow? Halloween is more important than a marathon!

At least one highly placed NYC Govt official is pushing to showcase the 'NYC Spirit' by making the NYCMarathon the poster child for NYC's recovery from the disaster. I think it's a hard sell.
seems Bloomberg is in the running for being "one highly placed..." ;)
i have two coworkers stuck in chicago who were supposed to fly back on jetblue sunday night. jetblue won't even fly back to the NE until THURSDAY!!!!
50,000 irate visitors are nothing to NYC. The logistics are impossible. Runners need to realize the world shouldn' revolve around their whims. The safety & security of the citizens should come first.
Where are people finding these cheap hotels for marathon weekend? Everything still looks expensive to me.
how are the logistics "impossible?" even if the subways aren't running on sunday (it sounds like the main manhattan ones will be), what's so hard about moving ~30K people to the start over the course of 4 or 5 hours when most of the city is asleep? there was a torrential downpour several years ago that knocked out the subway during the morning rush hour. people took buses, cabs, cars, bikes or walked to work in a much more compact space of time and there were exponentially more people angrily wanting to get transported back then. get a clue.
is google that hard?

Energy needs to be refocused to helping others instead. I love the marathon but.... If people still want to run it why don't they run themselves downtown and climb 20+ stories and bring food and water to those in the dark. Or why don't they go out there and volunteer to all those people in Breezy Point and Seaside Heights that lost EVERYTHING. Mary would come out a bigger person if she refocused her resources.
The race will go on, and tens of thousands of participants may not be able to make it there.
No worries, since they didn't show up (their fault), the race doesn't have to worry about returning their race fees, which they might have to do if they cancelled.
