If you're talking cross country, I would say to go out hard like usual. It is harder to make up ground when a course is sloppy than when it is dry.

This^is the answer. You need to be in the lead or near the lead to avoid the hazzards of a sloppy course. If you get trapped back in the pack, you're toast.
Go out at 4:20 or better for the first mile so you don't get mud kicked in your eyes. Then float for a while to recover, but make sure you don't slow down to 4:30 or they'll catch you. As Gerry Lindgren always says, go out fast and then throw in a burst and then kick it in as hard as you can.

When rain hits your skin it stimulates endorphins, so you'll be able to run faster. Go out normal & see how you feel with the mud & all. I bet half way through you'll feel great.
