XC is only college sport with no athletic scholarships. Everyone is on a T&F scholarship which probably plays into the politics of your statement.
No more dual meets
No team scoring
Expensive travel to achieve times/marks no one outside sport understands
Field events listed as metric in media communications
Often no meet programs
No play-by-play announcer or unimformed announcer only commenting on 1st place or top 3.
Twelve hour competitions or 3-day, 36 hour competitions!
Volunteers as officials
Coaches arranging officials
Coaches maintaining their own facilities
People from general public strolling through middle of T&F practice as there is nothing going on around them
Sometimes not getting RESULTS until returning from the competition site
...but some of it is "instituationalized" and just nonsense to the newcomer. Still cross country and track & field are the greatest two sports on earth!
