John or Gary Tuttle?
I remember him as the Big 30 Runner of the year. Chasing Terry Wile and beating out Jeff Wolfe. Circa 1974-77
Interesting to see yet another high-level masters runner with A-fib.
Very impressive. He is known best for making the marathon team in '84 but I did know that he was a great Steepler in the 70's. I assume that he was a great miler/2miler and XC runner in HS, it is weird that he never tried the 3M/5k in college or even the 10k.
Impressive progression in the marathon though: 2:14, 2:12, 2:10, Olympic Team in 2:12.
Glad he is still running, good for him.
Most kids wanted to be like Pre- Tuttle was my idle! Grew up the next town over - Southern Tier NY boys can hold their own! Both Tuttle & Pfitz are section V runners!

Anybody remember him passing the pace car at a Rochester HS meet?
I remember him well. He came flying by me on the final turn to win the Penn Relays high school 2-mile in 1977.
Ah, the McQuaid Invitational. I was there, running in a different heat. Don't remember watching John's race, but he was a monstrous runner. Wouldn't have surprised me if John had passed the pace car. (Actually usually a Jeep used to guide the runners around the fairly tortuous multi-loop course.)
Remember watching John at the Alfred Invitational at his home school. Seemed like he had a 100-200 yard lead on the field less than a mile into the race.

Mile - 4:10.6
2 Mile - 8:57.2 (Penn Relays, 1977)
XC - NY State Class C champion, 1976
1977 NYS indoor champs: won both the mile in 4:17.5 and 1000 yd in 2:14.2 to single-handedly win the Team Championship for his HS.

Heroes of my youth in Big 30 land! Had to dredge this thread up because Tuttle would have been a god on this site had he been born 20 years later.
I loved scouring meet results in the Times Herald back then. John Tuttle was the best our area ever produced on the men's side. Just under 9-flat if I remember right.
Terry Stanley from Eldred was another elite marathoner from that area. A few years older than John and not quite on John's level, but I know he ran the trials at least once.
It seems like John is still alive and well livng down south somewhere...seems the stories about him partying have lived on as well.
I'd be curious to know where some of the people who remember him from HS grew up? I was born in Olean. I only knew Tuttle through the newspaper, but was always a fan.
