I raced the guy a number of times in the late 80s (I wasn't too close to him most of the time) and spent time around him at major events. A wild guy and a character with a penchant for drink. Talented and fun, usually. I do recall some obnoxious moments after the races when much consumption had taken place.
Pretty impressive, his longevity, though.

No but I saw him and Salazar get passed by Pfitzinger on TV.

I knew Gary when he competed in the Indy Life masters circuit about 10-12 years ago. He was an awesome competitor and we all enjoyed partying with him after the races. I had heard about some of Gary's obnoxious moments but he must have outgrown them by the time he competed as a masters athlete.
I outkicked him in a local 10k by 5 seconds in 2006. Of course I was 20 at the time and he was 47.

about a year and a half a ago, i did a few track workouts with the guy...
Gary was a different distance running Tuttle--also very good, but never made an Oly team.
what a crew down in Auburn around that time, Tuttle, Chris Fox, 'Gravy', Jones, Jaeger, Abshire, et.al. why didn't that bunch win a NCAA XC championship?

John Tuttle was one of those runners who consistently placed well in major road races when I was a teenager just beginning to read more and more about the sport. Dude was a great runner.
Gary was wild then and still is today!! Go Gary!!!
Don't forget Fred Tuttle either!

Was that Fred or Gary in Rochester?
Don't really know anything about him but he grew up in the same area that I did and still has the 5k and the 32 section records

Tuttle was a stud. Raced track for Berlin Polytechnic in the early '40s, U.S. Army Surgeon in Korea, 6'4", 195 pounds, auburn hair, hazel eyes. His career was cut short in a skydiving accident.
