I did not now German Fernandez was in movies and/or tv shows. I am also interested in some of German's good movies and tv shows. Thanks.
best way is reading, start with simple stuff like Grimms fairytales. Books with German on one page and English translation on the opposite page are particularly good.
Learn vocab by recording the english word on cassette/mp3 player leave pause and 3 secs later the german equivalent. Play it in the car or walking to work etc. Buy German newspapers die Suddeutsche Zeitung and magazines like Der Spiegel.
If you have a college nearby put up an advert for a German speaker to teach you German and you will teach them English. Most Germans English is excellent but even if you have German conversations with Polish/Hungarian etc students you will get good practice and gain confidence.
TV - video the news and replay it looking up vocab you don't know. Watch German films mit Untertiteln such as Wings of Desire, Europa Europa, The Lives of Others etc.
Viel Spass
Wings of Desire
Faraway, So Close
The Lives of Others
Run Lola Run
Aguirre the Wrath of God
Das Boot (director's cut)
Downfall
Nosferatu, the Vampyre
I would check out GF on Flotrack.
I really enjoyed the show Jackass dubbed into German when I was there. Immersion is better than anything. Get into some program that has you in Germany in a dorm with non-Germans who are not from the U.S. or Commonwealth and all of you will have to speak German to communicate. Germans in the south or east of Germany will be much more likely to speak German with you than those in Berlin, because the latter will speak to you in English even if you speak to them in German.

Aguirre the Wrath of God
+1
Can't go wrong with Herzog/Kinski
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes
Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht
Woyzeck
Fitzcarraldo
Cobra Verde
Mein liebster Feind
Books:
Friedrich Dürenmatt - Besuch der alten Dame
Stefan Zweig - Sternstunden der Menschheit
Thomas Mann - Josef und seine Brüder (far better than Buddenbrooks in my opinion)
Learning another language is a b*tch, but at least you'll see some good movies along the way. Here's my favorites from Netflix.
As Far as my Feet will Carry Me
The Edukators -
The Forest for the Trees
I kinda want movies that are online for free...
I was thinking that there have to be some german tv shows online for free or something.
It would cost a bit but if you get Dish satellite service you can get several channels straight from Germany-

Just go to the library & look under the foreign section of DVDs. Youtube has some full movies.

part 3
Some more movies targeted towards the 18-35 range...
-Good bye Lenin!
-Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei
-Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (older but Bowie makes a cameo)
As for daily reading, Berliner Zeitung. If you are a football/soccer fan, kicker.de
There is a German equivalent "The Office" called "Stromberg". I have only seen a few episodes, but it wasn't that bad. There is also a show called "Durch die Nacht" which takes two (usually Euro) entertainers and they spend a night out talking about their lives. Usually in German, sometimes in English/French, but has German subtitles.
Yeah, youtube has all these movies, but they all have english subtitles. I would like either german subtitles or no subtitles. (When my german teacher used to show us movies, she would put english subtitles and we never picked up on any of the german, we just read the bottom)
The two main German public TV stations, have online-archives where it is possible to watch most of the TV shows of the last few weeks for free.(I think that should be possible from outside Europe, too.):

Furthermore one can watch most of the shows with German subtitles, which could be helpful when trying to learn a language.
I got Das Leben der Anderen from my library. Das Boot should be available, too.
I would definitely recommend "german scholar's" suggestions, btw.
Also, *some* videos on YouTube can have their subtitles disabled, or you can just edge the frame down on your computer screen so that the bottom part (with the subtitles) is hidden.
Somewhat strangely, I found "Triumph des Willens" (Triumph of the Will) fairly good for improving my German. Some of the speeches weren't so helpful, but much of the narration was.

Thats actually really usufull. I'm a huge Law and Order fan and SOKO Stutgart on ZDF looks like a good german alternative.
Danke!

You sound lazy and stupid. Good luck learning the German language.
I think this one is a fairly informative German video
I'm a fan of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Start with his BRD trilogy of:
Marriage of Maria Braun
Lola
Veronika Voss
Some Wim Wenders has already been mentioned, but he has a lot of good films.
Don't think I've seen "The Lives of Others" mentioned, but it is very good. I may think of others.
