Here's a freebie, and it's excellent:

Joe Newton's Coaching Cross Country Successfully is a good starting point.

Read Running with the Buffaloes. Wetmore defines periodization near perfectly.
Thank you- appreciate your help!
I am here. How can I help you?

How long has this Manual been out? It really looks pretty good for a freebie. Does anyone know which coach or coaches were responsible for Chapters 3 and 4? Not really a lot of depth, but for sheer basics it is very simple and easy to understand.
I did read it rather hastily but it looks like you could just follow this and be successful at the high school level. Starting in June with 2 to 3 miles sounds pretty conservative however.
Anyone else have some thoughts on this?
Congratulations to all those California coaches who put this together.
you? charisma
them? miles upon miles
...that's all you need.

Sad, but very true. (And, for high school, the miles don't have to be as high as one would think.)
The key is consistency. Have them run year round...and you, the coach, need to be there to motivate them too! Don't be lazy, tell them to do miles, & expect them to do it without your supervision. This goes back to Rule #1 of Charisma.
I enjoyed this one.

I would be very hesitant to recommend RWTB to a novice HS coach seeking training knowledge. Great book, but someone with little experience, and especially working with unseasoned runners, may not spot the many signs of impending breakdown.

whirledpeas- thank you for keeping it simple!
For training, Daniels Running Formula is all you need. As for the extra X-factor aspects of coaching a great team... there really is no manual, sorry.

Yeah great coaching tidbits for young runners too. Such as run kids into the ground and tell anorexic girls the need to look like "skeletons in condoms." then sleep with one of your athletes and later make her coach.
I personally wouldn't recommend that to someone who coaches adolecents as it is a fast track to prison. But to each their own I guess.
