I have many, many friends who waited til marriage. Not because they were homely, lesbian or 500lbs, but because they saw and later experienced first-hand (hands?) the value of waiting. They weren't freaks or emotionally scarred, they just wanted it to mean more on their honeymoon and the years after.
It is a very normal idea.
