Excellent rugby team.
Pretty good, got some solid runners
Have a few 47 guys and mid 10 100m guys. Not stellar but pretty solid. If i remember correctly the triple jump guys weren't bad either.
Distance or sprints?
distance.
jonesboro's a dry county right? otherwise, what's the place like?
If you decide to go to Jonesboro, AR, just be warned that it is a desolate, conservative university town with an average university. I wouldn't recommend going there.
They have produced some great T&F athletes in the past. Indoor facility allows to host Indoor Meets, and the school gets good support from locals. If you visit and like it, and can find a major you are happy with, go for it. You can have a great College experience and career..

This seems to be the consensus from most guys I've spoken to regarding the college choice process, whilst living in a desirable location is helpful, the entire experience does seem to be based predominantly on the way in which you approach it/treat it.
thanks.
I went to High School in Arkansas. While the HS distance running was.. mehhh, the pole vaulting was insane. 10 guys in the state could vault in the 16s. One chum, Spencer McCorcal (sp) would still be vaulting after the 4x400 (didn't even enter the competition til 17 feet).
These vaulters didn't go to U. of Ark. They went to Arkansas State. I guess it was like a Mecca for vaulters. Some former Olympian named Murray something worked there or something and the state's vaulters all went there on the weekends. It was weird.
Anyway, the place is a haven for badass vaulters. That's all I know.
Thanks. What about the scene for picking up chicks or partying?
Party scene is okay, but don't expect to go with your teammates. The school is very conservative and the distance squad, while very fun to be around, are even more so. Christianity has a very heavy presence.
And we wonder why American distance running sucks? Nice focus, man.
As the OP, I didn't post about partying etc. as it's a stupid question, thanks for everyone's info about the distance squad etc.
One of my good friends went on a visit there this year. He's a decent two miler, 10 flat, but he hated it. He said the coach was a total jerk. The coach agreed to meet his family at the track to talk, but the coach showed up two hours late and blew him off. Although they do have a superb pole vaulting team.
Can't defend a Coach blowing Off an Athlete...but a 10 flat 2 miler would be a minor walk-on...They should be thankful that a D-1 Coach actually met with them in person..
Well for Arkansas that's not too bad. We had a weak year this year. But Arkansas state is probably 3-4 on the list for running colleges in Arkansas, so they should be happy for a 10 flat 2miler

Yes, Earl Bell has his training facility there-- he's trained several 19 footers and Olympians in Jonesboro in the last decade. I guess because of the chance to work with him, Arkansas State always has amazing vaulters. It's a really cool community.
that's strange, the coach I've been speaking to has been rather nice/helpful.
I'm concerned that I'd end up with a useless degree and be stuck in a very dull town, whilst I know letsrun is troll happy, anyone with a legitimate insight into the state/uni would be great to hear from.
