This approach would make more sense but I doubt it will go sub 13:20. I also agree with your point that he will probably be injured. I keep hearing things about him training on the Alter G and underwater treadmill which is not a good sign.

He needs to get some real track work in before he races. Hengelo makes more sense than Oxy. Is there not another 10,000 somewhere like in Canada where he can get a qualifier later?
Is there a 10,000 at Harry Jerome in June?
I guess not, but why can't he run with the Kenyans at Prefontaine? What's to prevent that? It's in his backyard practically?
Ritz can actally compete in the USOT 10k with out a qualifing mark and he would have to at least run the Olympic 10k A standard to be competitive in the USOT 10K.
The longest event is the 1500.

Kenyans only, because it's their trials.

are you kidding me? ritz cant race once a month without hurting something. Next will be some injury to the thumbs that causes a nerve in his knee to inflame.
HAHA... Good one!

ritz figures to peak in august. after the marathon, you can only do so much to adjust and peak on the track.
in the 10k mid 27 will do for an opener - a very hard but not max effort.
and ritz needs a 1310 ish 5k opener. he can max out on the 5.
then he can throw in a fast 3k race or time trial.
from there you adjust the speed work as required to bring it to a boil.
if all goes well by the trials ritz should be able to do 13:0x and 27:1x
he could make the 10k team but in the 5k, it will take sub 13 shape, and this will require everything to go right for the ritzer.
"Sal knows what he's doing"? This is the same Sal who tinkered with Ritz's form which has turned into a 2.5 year disaster for Ritz.
Just like the 70s! Why not? Then jump back into the marathon when Hall's PF gets worse and he pulls out. We are way too specialized these days.
Yes. It will likely take an Olympic A time to make he US Team in the 10k. Why wouldn't Ritz and Rupp just work together at the Trials?
Realistically, Ritz has very little chance to make the 5k Team. He can push the pace or do whatever he wants, but he is not going to beat Lagat or Rupp or Lomong and will be lucky to beat a couple others. I'd put him 4th-6th.
Why should Rupp work any harder than he has to with the 5 double looming?
well to Ritz's credit, he did beat Lomong and Teg in that road 5k in November in NYC off a year long injury, and marathon training. If Ritz is on the starting line, u never know what can happen. Hard part just getting him to the line.

It is a closed event. That was the deal that Pre made with Athletics Kenya.
Well, Ritz is heading to training camp in Utah with the rest of his group so he must fairly healthy.
