I was in one small town recently with some pro athletes who had been invited to a race along with their coach. We were there for five days. The following all happened within one 24 hours period in the town:
-Near the end of a workout at a public track two cops showed up with some kind of trainee jogging program. While the fattees went out on the track my guys (non-English speaking, non-white, non-American) came back over to the bleachers where the coach and I were sitting. One of my guys started pulling on his warmup pants leaning up against the side of the bleachers and the cops started shouting at him. I intervened and they threatened to arrest us for public indecency. Meanwhile, a white jogger finished his run and went over to where two H.S. girls where practicing soccer on the infield, took off his shirt and started doing leg stretches wearing only short shorts. The cops didn't even blink an eye.
-While we were crossing the street with the walk signal a cop car rolled right up to the edge of the crosswalk against the red light without its lights or siren going and, no warning, BLARED some kind of blast of noise to get us out of the way so it could hurry through to whatever non-emergency they were off too.
-With no warning another cop stopped us and demanded to see the (non-English speaking, non-white, non-American) coach's ID. All he had with him was his driver's license, resulting in a protracted castigation for not having something the cop could read.
The small town? Manhattan, New York City.
