Could be good troll though.

No, he's been running for 45 years AND 10 days.
I have done several 15mile / 24km runs with headphones. My
three longest runs however, have been done without headphones (20 miles, 30km, 27km).
Never raced with them, and only actually use them about twice a month.
my longest run in time has been five hours helping an ultramarathoner on his last 23M of a 100 miler. all runs without headphones. if you have an inner life and actual thoughts, even memories of music, you don't need headphones.

There's a difference between need and want.
I always run with headphones (rarely any music) to keep the creeps away.
I’ve always liked running outside while listening to music on your headphones to watching a movie in a movie theater while listening to different music on your headphones. You may enjoy the music, but you are ruining the more enjoyable activity by drowning out the sounds you are supposed to hear with utterly unrelated music. A treadmill is a different matter, since being tortured while being forced to stare at a blank wall is made more tolerable by the addition of music.
I agree. I definitely don't need headphones, but I want them. I use them because they make a relatively mundane activity enjoyable.
33 miles. Solo.
33 miles without headphones
24 miles with headphones on a treadmill
18.6 miles with headphones on the road (race)
14 miles carrying cassette player listening to
Lover Boy and Billy Squier tapes (1982)
I like to do the opposite and use them for my morning 3-5 mile shakeouts. Workouts and Long runs I like to run with friends, and I sing them songs about freedom.
I've never worn headphones while running, but I have a very active mind and there's usually music in my head already.
Also, I have not listened to music with headphones at all in the past 7 years. I just don't like headphones.
38 miles - they didn't have em then ... and neither did I
Been running since 1974. Never worn headphones. So, approximately 700,000 miles.
27 miles, which also happens to be the longest I've ever run.

So you've been running north of 350 mpw for a little less than 40 years? I knew some of you '70s guys were mileage hounds, but d@mn!

Why they hell do you do it if it's not inherently enjoyable? Is your job that amazing that you need to seek out an obsessive, time-consuming habit that doesn't even feel good to you, just to balance things out. I'm not saying I enjoy all my runs. But I enjoy the great majority of my runs, w/o music.
