Haven't been on lets run since fall so I don't know if he's the new it kid or not. But 1:49 indoors for a junior is great. Especially because he looks like he used to be more of a distance runner with his 9:12 two miel and 4:11 1600.

He's also a 15:40 guy at Holmdel, #3 at NJ MOC this fall.
Fitness wise, in the next 15 months, yeah I think it could happen. Problem is that being fit enough isn't enough. He'll need the right race. He's from a very small school - I don't foresee him getting a chance for a sub-4 1600 leg on a DMR like Webb did at Penn.
His 800 time says he has the ability. So, coaching and desire are the items in question.
Absolutely. What is his open 400 time? He has to be at least 50.0 and with a 9:12 two mile he's already at 4:03 this year for potential.
of course his times suggest that he has a real shot. Andrews and thers also had a shot but didn't break 4:00
The mile will/is possibly be his best event. He should be under 4 this year if he stays healthy and gets in the right race.
This year might be a bit of a stretch, but I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled before he graduate. He battled injuries a lot last spring and still managed running 1:51 in his first full year of running
If he trains hard, sure, it's possible. But his results are far from sub-4 territory at this point (I'd say more like a projected 4:04 for 1600m as a senior)
Which would still be a great time, of course. But if he really puts in the work, stays healthy and comes up big at the right race... who knows?
If he can run 1:49, especially indoors, he can break 4. The 9:12 is WEAK, though. He needs a lot more time and strength; yes, he CAN do it, but, odds are, he won't.

Why would indoors matter? Did he run his 1:49 on a 200m flat. or a 160 banked board track?
With a 1:49 800 and a 2:23 1000 hes definitely got potential, but i agree that hes gonna need to build up some more strength, not that his mile/2mile times are slow, they just aren't fast enough to display the strength needed to run sub-4. His 5k especially shows his distance weakness, but xc is pretty give or take when it comes to times considering course difficulty.
15:40 at holmdel is like running well under 15 at any of the golf course 5k courses that most of the country runs on. that course is consistantly ranked one of the hardest in the country. and the 9:12 two mile was run essentially alone because cheserek was way out in front and ben was by himself in second. get him in the right race (maybe the dream mile this year vs cheserek) and who knows
He got injured before XC season. He had no base going into the season. If he did not get injured, I think he had the potential to go 15:25 at holmdel. He went 16:02 as a sophomore at holmdel and that was his first season of actual training. I think he definitely has a shot at sub 4 with his 48 second 400m speed. It will probably be sub 48 by senior year.
With his coaching, I know that his actual high school coach does not do much. Most of the coaching comes from his dad and Kevin Byrne. Both of which had won MOC titles in the past. The only thing holding him back is that he is very injury prone.
Honestly, with a 48 and 1:49 I don't see how he could NOT go sub 4. Was that a relay split or open?
few from ne are at full strength indoors. peak in june. we've had incredible depth and talent in hs for the past 12 years now and only two have broken 4, one guy a 3:53/8:45 (no doubt could have run much faster later) and the other 3:59/8:29. Malone's got a ways to go but there's no doubt he'll be one of a few to break 4 as a freshman in college.
Actually, if he had a 51.5/1:49 he'd have a better shot at sub-4:00

Not exactly. We aren't talking if he will go sub 4 as a junior. We know that he has great speed and he can gain endurance through a strong XC season and by increasing milage next winter. If he could only run 51.5, that would leave much less room for improvement. It is much easier to gain strength, and that is by doing more miles. It is MUCH tougher to bring your quarter down to a 48 when you can currently only run 51.5.
By the way, Ben has better XC and distance marks than Robby andrews did, and seems to be similar for the 800. Andrews ran a 4:03.
Like Andrews, 800 might be his event. 1:46 in his SR year could be a possibility. But if he concentrates on the mile I can see sub 4 by next yr.
