Downard's act was selfish in yet another way - the guy who legitimately won (you know- the first finisher who actually bothered to register) was robbed of the experience of finishing first. The cheers of the crowd were stolen by a guy who wasn't registered. There are plenty of people who have a reason to be miffed at Downard's little act.

Scott Downard: I wasn't keen on tying up an elite entry if there was a good chance I might not use it. I actually even glanced at the Cowtown Marathon’s Website and didn't see an obvious elite standard or specific contact email. I work with Jerry and was aware that he had entered the race in October but wasn't going to be using the entry. I knew the entry was comp’ed — I don’t know if he knew the race director or how he got a hold of an elite entry.

A lot of races set their own standard for what is considered, and often called, elite status. I have gotten to start in the elite corral by running faster than a 1:35 half. Nobody is offering me a shoe contract but that particular race considered my time fast enough to meet their definition. I'm sure that is the definition that the runner is considering.

That's who I felt bad for - Kolin Styles. He won in 2:37- certainly not an elite time, which means that winning a local marathon is probably as good as it's going to get for him from a running glory standpoint. He had his moment stolen by what was essentially a bandit. Boo to Downard!!!!!!!!!

I read that his actual PR was a 2:25:33, still not super fast but his performance at Cowtown was a lot slower since he paced a friend to a 1:18:00 half marathon before deciding to run the rest of his race at a faster pace.

This quote from the interview had me scratching my head:

Is he implying that he is making the race director "suffer" - presumably at the hands of a bandit because he suffers from the loneliness of the long distance runner?

This guy sounds like a tool. I can't comprehend what must be going through this guy's mind if he is banditing to stick it to the race director.

Wow...I hadn't read this quote previously. Maybe it made sense when he spoke it, but in print it is possibly the most convoluted non-sense statement I've ever read. I don't think I could have constructed a more confusing non-sequitur if I tried.

Maybe if Scott Downard volunteered at some races he would be more understanding of what goes into putting on a race.

Y'know, all those things he takes for granted.

He makes it seem like the race is there to cater to his whim, even when he doesn't pay the entry fee.

He got more recognition from this DQ than winning by paying.
