Gosh, I like this guy just about as much as I like the atkins diet.
When will people realize that the only way to really lose weight is to burn more calories than they take in.
but that's...so simple. i need a long book about it. and diet tips. and recipes. and celebrity endorsements. and i still want to eat whatever i want, when i want. and i don't like to exercise. your system is too easy.
that's funny - but so true
Hopefully other Atkins diet freaks will wake up and realize that such a high concentration of fat calories is harmful to their health. It's time to re-emphasize the food pyramid!
I fear that many of the Atkins followers have already been brainwashed by his ultra low carb lifestyle. I used to work with a guy that was on the Atkins diet. He was trying to convince me that "the fat doesn't have any carbohydrates to latch on to, so they simply get flushed out during trips to the bathroom." The whole thing made no sense at all (sigh!).
Someone should start the following new diet fad:
"First, reduce your total fluid intake to 16oz per day. The loss of that extra water weight will help you shed those unwanted pounds. After reaching your daily limit, start smoking to compensate for the thirst. The nicotine rush will provide you the relief needed until the next day. The smoking should also curb the appetite."
I was interested in this until I noticed that a radical vegan group was behind him.
I find Atkins to be a terrible diet for most people and part of me wants this guy to win big, but really, he had never heard that following the diet might not be healthy?
No kidding. Atkins follower = jackass. Why do they think we evolved with big molars and small canines? We're supposed to be chewing on roots and twigs, not hunks of meat.
...and another thing. Anyone see a pic of the good Dr. Atkins right before he died? Yep-- he was F-A-T! That should be a big clue.
Chuck d-
that made me laugh out loud.
Did a Google search and it turns out that this is just an example of natural selection, except for the lawsuit part. That is, anyone dumb enough to think an Atkins diet or Zone diet or any of that stuff will help them slim down in the absence of both brain and body engagement deserves to die earlier than a normal person with the sense to exercise. Hopefully this will occur before they can breed. Why doesn't someone promote the Crystal Meth diet. Ever seen a fat Methie - no, me either, and neither has Google. But what the FUCK do I know, I'm no nutritionist.

The same radical vegan group behind this lawsuit released those photos (how they got them was never resolved as far as I can tell). Atkins was bedridden and in a coma for a while before he died. One common side effect of being bedridden and on IVs is water retention.
I saw an interview with Atkins about 6 months before he fell down and he looked okay. He looked like a tall guy but certainly not overweight.
It says he started the diet when he realized his weight had gone up from 140 to 148. He could hardly have been fat, unless he was 5'5" or under. That's not exactly tipping the scales these days.
Many top middle distance and sprinters are on some format of the zone diet...Suzy, Mo Greene to name a few....I'm not sure if Marius Bakken is still on zone but he was all gung ho about it for a few months after hearing Barry Sears speak....
I've lost 50 lbs. since February 13th (no BS) and I keep getting asked if I am on Atkins (or crack!) -- NO! It's called eating less than 2000 calories a day ... running 6 days a week when I'm not running daily ... and throwing a few weights around in the gym. No gimmacks -- just sweat a little and don't be a glutton! PERIOD.

Pretty interesting this guy is only looking for $15,000. He doesn't have much to gain. The problem for the Atkins corpoartion is that if they loose this case, it will open up the flood gates for similar suits, never mind the bad p.r. it will attract.
This will also hurt many other companies who have changed their products to be Atkins friendly. My local bagel shop is now selling low carg bagels and I heard Krispy Kreme is coming out with low carb doughnuts. How the hell are these things made out of.
I for one think that a law suit like this is stupid, people should know better, like the people who tried to sue McDonalds, but these Atkins books have brainwashed so many people. Maybe something like this will bring attention to the problem and knock some sense into these Atkins followers.
Odie, congrats on losing that weight the "old-fashioned way". I'm in the same boat, only losing weight a little slower (I'm 6'1", and have gone from 205 to 195 since March). Only been running about 15-20 miles/wk though due to injury issues. Have probably gained a good 5 lbs in lean muscle mass, however, from lifting weights twice/wk.
In defense of the Atkins diet....
The Atkins diet is about weight loss, not about health and fitness. This diet is for people who are very over weight, and it works for them. But, once they lose the weight I think it is important for them to return to a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle, which includes some sort of physical activity (ie. running, biking, walking)
Let these people lose their weight, most of them have tried many different methods and failed, if this works. More power to them. More fit active people in the world is a good thing, cause if that fat guy in the car becomes a thin guy in a car who likes to run...well, he will be less resentful of you running on the road that he is driving on, thus less likely to run your running ass over.
(as a cyclist I feel that fat people tend to be less likely to share the road, either they are intentional in their behavior or they just can not empathise... who knows other then them, I can not read their minds)

I didnt know the guy was skinny - but I still think it cannot be proven that his atkins diet (I am NOT a fan of it either) caused his acute coronary syndrome. I am just sick of the 'blame someone else' mentality of this country.
It is intersting that the atkins craze has influences such as affecting the world's sugar economy especially in developing nations, the stock price of krispy kreme donuts, and the florida citrus industry.
I'm netiher for nor agains all of the nonsense, but how is this any different than the following:
I buy Pfitzinger's marathoning book, follow the marathon plan perfectly, develop a stress fracture, sue Pfitzinger.
