Quite an improvement.
In the original newspaper article she was quoted as saying she was just hoping she would finish. But obviously she ran one before and knew she could. Fishy...

Perhaps she just graduated from the Kip Litton School for Road Racing.

There can only be one of her in Blue Springs, and yes, she is quite fast. I had coached her in track for a few years, and will again this coming saeson. She was recruited to a new self-procalimed "elite" youth club in the area last summer, who promptly injured her training under an overzealous plan for young athletes. I will be happy to have her back, and bring her along for the long term, so she enjoys herself and remains healthy and happily involved in the sport she loves.
Those are both ethiopian names. tsion = zion yared is an ethiopian saint.
Big update:
She's won the FL Runners meet with 18:33 as a 7TH GRADER... (Her PR is 18:08)
She's definitely very fast, perhaps the next Mary Cain?
I saw her run the H.S. mile at the FL relays last year, she looked very good, but not great compared to some Cali and NE middle schoolers. I think what I recall most is how tiny she was compared to the other girls and someone informed me that she was only 12 yo. I have heard of 8th graders running for high schools, but 12 yo (6th) is a bit much. She has an older sister whose pretty good as well. I think she definitely benefits from a no fat pre puberty body. Young girls like that are naturally aerobic. From what I was told she runs typical H.S. mileage and probably less mileage than what her times indicate, hopefully they keep it that way for a couple more years.
a 10 year old girl ran 19:45 on a certified 5k course, winning among women in a race I ran recently
it was quite freaky --- how good is sub 20 for a 10 yo girl?
is it the kind of speed gift that could make her a top national runner? an olympian?
and she was white, american born and raised
Not even close to competitive.
My 9 year old just ran 21:13 in a flat 5k. Impressive but lots of kids do it.
18:47 4th grade boy just a few weeks ago.

Passed a girl in the park telling someone she couldn't run the NYC Marathon so she'd given her number to a friend. Was this girl 6 foot tall with a beard?
