And her younger sister was fifth.

Define competitive.
Not to take anything away from this kid's performance (21:19 5k by a 9 year old girl), but the real competition was in the "13.1 Marathon" (a registered trademark of US Road Sports & Entertainment Group).

That is just awesome. I have never heard of a 4th grader winning a 5K.

Huge improvement. PEDs.
Those don't sound like good ol' American names...I bet she's actually old enough to be in 8th grade.
Had to be a short course. Tell her to join summer track, she would win every race for her division guaranteed.
Was this 5K held in Manlius, NY by any chance?

Back in the first running boom we had the "mini marathon" that was usually about 3 miles long
If a fourth-grader wins a race, it is not competitive. I don't think I'd consider a race competitive unless a winner is at least a junior or senior in high school, and it's a male, and he's one of the best high schoolers in the area.
Sign her and sister up for triathlon training.
100 mile weeks must finally be paying off
Actually, nice run for a Fourth-grader, but any local 5k in the country will probably have the female winner run faster, so not what you would call a competitive 5k.

About 3 miles = 2.6 miles. At least that's the one kid run I did as a young teenager.
Not sure what to think of this. 21 min is awesome for a 9yo girl. But this was anything but a competitive 5k. Even on the men's side: 18 something for the win.
agree. she could be the next Mary Decker Tabb/Slaney
Hold the presses, sports fans. These girls were not on Peds, but were wearing a version of the Spira running shoes that have been banned by the USATF. It's all been nullified, like it never happened.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
