It means, do your very best so you have no regrets even if you fail (b/c you know you did your best). It does not mean ignore the consequences of some thoughtless action. Kids might be warping the meaning of this phrase these days, though.
Just because you "hate" and repented your anal sex experience with your dorm roommate when you were 19 doesn't mean you are allowed to hate others who currently engage and are unrepentant of their current gay sex encounters.
I'm not sure if you're an "old" person talking to the "kids" of the world or a young person talking to the generation that set in action the complete reversal of everything the USA used to be.

get a life. every generation has the same behaviors, just with slightly different trends. every generation ever has partied, done stupid shit, and yet, each generation will accomplish more than the next. yeah, i get drunk and do stupid shit sometimes and piss people off, but i also have a 4.0 in a duel major and am a varsity athlete at D1 college while maintaining an almost fulltime job and volunteering around the community. now stop bitching about other people and use that time to accomplish something yourself.

Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.
The comment above is from Book 4 of Plato's "Republic" (360 BC) and is attributed to Socrates, though there is some dispute as to whether Socrates actually wrote it, but the fact that it is in the "Republic" is not open to dispute.
It is not exactly new for the older generation to complain about the younger.
