I hunt as much as I can. Deer, turkey, pheasant, dove, quail, grouse, and wild hog, depending on the time of year and my location. First and foremost I just love being out in nature and observing the natural world. Like running, hunting allows you to see things that you probably never would have seen without it.
Hunting each species is its own craft and it's a real challenge to master each one, if that's even possible. I think turkey hunting is perhaps my favorite due to the "conversation" with the turkey and trying to call it in while being absolutely still and quiet. It's also probably the most challenging species to hunt, although finding and shooting grouse in brushy habitat comes close.
Safety and ethics come first for me. I'm much more of a meat hunter than a trophy hunter, but there are some ecological benefits to hunting large, old individual animals (see QDMA, for example). It is extremely rewarding to feed my family with lean, organic, sustainable meat that I harvested. If you have the curiosity, I definitely encourage you to find a mentor and give hunting a try.
