So, I was diagnosed with a tibial stress fracture almost six weeks ago due to a dramatic increase in mileage. In that six week period I have obviously not been running at all, but have been trying to stay in shape with the elliptical, and was able to get my insurance to pay for a bone stimulator.
First of all, I never had any pain while simply walking. All pain derived from running, typically around the two mile mark. The pain would go away after about an hour or two (after having stopped running, of course.) Nor did I have any pain walking up or down stairs, as I have read from other people that have suffered from tibial stress fractures.
After almost six weeks, I am still not experiencing any pain from walking. I have read Pete Pfitzinger's protocol for returning after a stress fracture. He states that if you can walk for an hour without any pain in the fracture area, you should be ready to try running. Yesterday, I put the treadmill on a 7 percent incline and walked for an hour experiencing absolutely zero pain.
However, I am wondering what other people have experienced? I don't want to return too early; I have no obligations to return to running, being that I am not on a team or anything. Nonetheless, it's really starting to drive me nuts that I can't run, especially with the fall weather making its long awaited appearance. From what I have described, what do you guys think? Am I ready to get back on the horse? And what program has ensured a successful comeback for you?
